When to stop the strong actives and fall back to a base routine

There is a moment most people miss: when skin starts stinging at something it tolerated last week. That is not a sign to add another active, it is a sign the barrier is thinning.

Other signs in the same family: tightness right after washing even with a gentle cleanser; flushing at temperature changes; a familiar moisturiser suddenly feeling slightly sharp going on.

At that point the job is to subtract, not add. Keep three steps — cleanse, moisturise, sun protection — and pause everything else until those signs have gone.

How to read INCI order, and why position matters more than presence

An INCI list runs in descending proportion down to the 1% threshold; below that the manufacturer chooses the order. So an ingredient listed fifth is certainly present in greater quantity than one listed thirtieth.

This is why “contains niacinamide” says almost nothing. A formula with niacinamide fifth and one with it thirty-eighth may both print that sentence on the box.

On this site, where the manufacturer publishes the full list we print the full list. Where the packaging shows only a few groups, we print only those groups and do not fill in the rest ourselves.

Extra layers do not add extra effect

Layering many products rests on a simple assumption: more is better. For skin that assumption fails — the amount of active that crosses the outer layer is limited, and the surplus sits on the surface.

What sits there does two unwanted things: it traps heat and sebum, and it makes sunscreen applied afterwards adhere less well.

Two moisturisers stacked on each other is the clearest case. Pick one.

Which one

Three options, chosen by what you need

Two moisturisers and a mask. All three hydrate and calm rather than treat.

Do not layer both. Extra layers add congestion risk rather than extra effect — pick one, according to the phase your skin is in.

Choose by your situation

The three options below differ in who they suit, not in which one is better.

Frequently asked questions

What should I use after laser or microneedling?

That is a medical situation, and the right person to answer is the doctor who performed it. This site does not replace that advice, even where the manufacturer positions a product for that group.

Do I have to stop the brightening cream to use a recovery one?

If your skin shows signs of thinning — stinging, tightness, redness — pause the treatment step and keep the three basics until it settles. Two weeks off and then returning is still faster than pushing through and needing two months off.

Can a moisturiser work as sunscreen?

No, even where titanium dioxide or zinc oxide appear in the ingredients. Those work as filters only at high concentration in a formula designed and tested for that purpose.
